Keep at least 13.5 feet of clear height over community roads, which is the vertical clearance commonly required for fire apparatus. Many RV parks and communities hold 14 to 15 feet because motorhomes and delivery trucks run taller. Confirm the exact number with your local fire marshal.
Why does clearance matter?
Low limbs strike roof-mounted air conditioners, antennas and awnings, scrape tall vehicles and block emergency access. After a storm they also trap debris and make roads harder to clear. A limb strike on a guest's RV is a claim waiting to happen.
What clearances should you aim for?
- Main roads and fire lanes: 13.5 feet minimum, 14 to 15 feet preferred.
- RV sites and entrances: 14 to 15 feet, with extra width for slide-outs and turning.
- Sidewalks and walking paths: about 8 feet so residents and golf carts pass without ducking.
- Around homes and units: keep limbs off roofs, and trim back from the structure so rubbing and debris stop.
How do you trim for clearance without hurting the tree?
Lift the canopy by removing the lowest limbs back to the trunk or a larger branch, rather than cutting stubs. Spread the work over more than one visit on heavily overgrown trees, since removing too much live canopy at once stresses them.
Measure clearance from the road surface to the lowest limb at its drooping point, not where it sits in dry weather. Limbs sag with rain and wind.
How do you keep it that way?
- Check clearance on a driving route at least once a year.
- Re-check after every named storm.
- Note trees that keep regrowing into the clearance zone. They may need a different species or removal.
When to call a pro
Work over roads and near utility lines needs a trained crew with traffic control. Atlas & Arbor trims, lifts canopies and removes problem trees on occupied properties, and coordinates notice to residents before equipment arrives.
