How Close Can a Tree Be to Your House Foundation in Florida?

For large shade trees, most arborists recommend planting at least 20 to 30 feet from the house, and farther for the biggest species. Small ornamental trees can sit closer. A tree that is already closer is not automatically a problem, but it deserves a close look.

Do roots damage foundations?

Roots rarely crack a well-built foundation on their own. The more common problems in Florida are roots lifting driveways, patios and pool decks, and growing into sewer, drain and irrigation lines. Most roots stay in the top foot or two of soil and spread well past the drip line, often as far as the tree is tall or more.

Foundation trouble is more likely when a tree is very close, the footing is shallow or the soil has changed. Drought or heavy root removal can also shift soil under a slab.

What are the warning signs?

  • New cracks in walls, slabs or tile that grow over time.
  • Doors or windows that suddenly stick.
  • Slow drains or repeated sewer backups.
  • Pavement lifting near the tree.
  • Branches over the roof, or a lean toward the house.

What should you do about a tree that is already close?

  1. Do not cut large roots near the trunk. It can make the tree unstable.
  2. Prune the canopy away from the roof and walls to reduce rubbing, debris and storm risk.
  3. Photograph and monitor any cracks, and mark them with a date.
  4. Get a professional opinion if damage is growing. A structural or plumbing inspection may be needed too, because roots are not always the cause.
  5. Consider removal if the tree is weak, declining or too big for its spot, and replant farther away.

When to call a pro

Our master arborist can evaluate the tree and its roots and explain your options. If the tree has to come out and is too close to the house to drop, we remove it in sections with a crane to protect your roof and yard.
